Whether you own your home or you’re in the process of buying one, this plumbing checklist will help you determine what, if anything, needs repairs.
First, Do a Visual Inspection
If you visually inspect your plumbing on a regular basis, many plumbing problems can be caught before they become an emergency. Here are some things to look for:
- Look for mildew on or near your pipes
- Look for any areas of corrosion or rust around the pipes
- Look for leaks in the pipes or watermarks on the walls or ceilings
- Look for any broken or corroding parts on the toilet
- Check your washing machine hoses for any cracks
Next, Test the Faucets
Turn all of the faucets on and off and make sure there are no leaks. You can test for a slow leak by putting a stopper in the drain after turning off the water. Come back a half hour later and check the drain to make sure it is dry.
And Finally, Test your Toilets
If you notice that your toilets become clogged easily or if they do not flush properly, you may have a plumbing issue. If you hear running for a long period of time after flushing you may also have a plumbing issue. You should also check to see if your toilet is securely attached to the floor. You can do this by putting your arms around the base and trying to move it. If it moves at all, you could have a plumbing leak.
